TESOL Graduate Certificate Program

Washington Academy of Languages at City University of Seattle offers an internationally-recognized, 15 credit graduate level TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Certificate Program for teaching English here and abroad. A Bachelor’s degree and English proficiency are prerequisites for admission to the program.

In this five-course certificate program, you’ll get a complete immersion into the teaching of English for Speakers of Other Languages. We’ll introduce second language acquisition theories and classroom practices.  You’ll learn the essentials of teaching techniques for developing curriculum and managing classes. You’ll get first-hand experience as you observe teachers and learners in real classroom situations and practice different ways to assess learner outcomes.

    • TESOL 510   Principles of Language Learning and Teaching (3 cr)
    • TESOL 525   Methods of Teaching Language (3 cr)
    • TESOL 530   Teaching Grammar (3 cr)
    • TESOL 540   Strategies for Teaching the Four Skills (3 cr)
    • TESOL 555   TESOL Materials Development and Selection (3 cr)

What Will I Learn?

We provide students a hands-on learning experience designed to bridge theory and practice. Students gain knowledge in language acquisition, development and linguistics, paying particular attention to classroom application.

  • Flexible

This is one of the only online certified TESOL program that includes field experience and individualized course work.

  • Completion Time

Students typically work part-time to complete five online courses in three quarters. Seattle-based students can finish in just one quarter by studying full-time in class during WAL’s summer intensive program. This option is offered onsite at City University’s Seattle campus.

Our academic team will advise you on local and international job searches.  You will also be added to our online graduate TESOL Group where you can post questions, read job announcements, and get general advice from peers in this field.
