TESOL in Puebla, Mexico

City University of Seattle’s Graduate Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages(TESOL) is a dynamic, hands-on learning experience designed to bridge theory and practice. CityU will launch the TESOL Graduate Certificate in Puebla, Mexico at its partner institution, Universidad Popular Autónoma del Estado de Puebla (UPAEP), a private non-profit university. UPAEP has nine high schools in Southern Mexico, which will serve as classroom space and as a lab for completing observation hours.

The TESOL Graduate Certificate is geared toward individuals who are
interested in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL). The coursework is built to teach you how to develop appropriate learning outcomes and a wide variety of techniques designed to teach others listening, speaking, reading, and writing English skills in order to communicate effectively.

Upon successful completion of the TESOL Graduate Certificate, you can apply credits to the CityU Master of Education in Adult Education degree program. This allows students to graduate with a Master’s degree in as few as 21 months.

Over the course of 5 weeks, in Puebla, Mexico, participants learn:
1. TESOL 510 Principles of Language Learning & Teaching (3 credits)
2. TESOL 530 Teaching Grammar (3 credits)
3. TESOL 525 Methods of Teaching Language (3 credits)
4. TESOL 540 Strategies for Teaching the Four Skills (3 credits)
5. TESOL 555 Materials Development & Selection (3 credits)

Class Description


Puebla is a city in east-central Mexico, just two hours southeast of Mexico City. A city with beautiful facades covered with talavera, Puebla is an authentic and unique place. You will be perfectly located in downtown Puebla, just a few blocks away from the city’s culinary history, colonial architecture and artisan pottery.

For the purposes of English proficiency requirements, English speaking countries are defined as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand exclusively
5. Original or certified copies of diplomas and transcripts with certified English translations

Textbooks are students’ responsibility. The approximate cost is $350. We advise you to purchase textbooks before arrival on site.


Teach in Mexico Experience

City University offers an option for students who may be planning to start an M.Ed in Adult Education with a TESOL concentration AFTER successful completion of their TESOL certificate.  In the Teach in Mexico Experience, students will spend one quarter (11 weeks) at one of UPAEP’s nine bilingual high schools in beautiful Puebla where they will assist English and content instructors in the classroom and act as a cultural ambassadors of English. The roles and responsibilities of the intern will be determined by the host high school and will vary based on each school’s immediate needs. These expectations will be clearly outlined before students are placed in a given school.


Residence Hall

Students may decide to live in the residence hall.  The deadline to apply for the residence hall is June 1st. Students who do not live in the residence hall, must arrange their own housing.
