Bilingual Endorsement

Becoming a bilingual teacher in the state of Washington is a rewarding and in-demand job. If you are bilingual currently and a K-12 teacher, the requirements for adding a Bilingual Endorsement to your Teaching Certificate are:

  1. Completion of 9 courses (27 Credits):
    • Introduction to Linguistics or Principles of Language Learning & Teaching
    • History and Methods of Teaching ESL/Bilingual Education
    • English Structure for ELL Teachers
    • Methods of Teaching Spoken Language
    • Methods of Teaching Reading and Writing to the ELL Student
    • Issues Across Cultures
    • Testing and Evaluation of the ELL Student
    • ELL Materials Selection and Development
    • History and Theory of Bilingual Education
  2. WEST-E exam (Score of 240 or above)
  3. 5 Credit Field Experience (Min. 15 hours over 3 weeks)
  4. Proof of fluency in a second language via ACTFL oral interview and written proficiency exam.

Endorsement Application

Students beginning the Endorsement program are required to submit the application for the Endorsement with the $100 application fee and transcripts to the Certification Coordinator at the School of Education, Seattle Pacific University. Application forms are available at the Certification Office at SPU.
