Teacher Education courses take place on the campus of Seattle Pacific University (year-round) or Pacific Lutheran University (summers only).

Seattle Pacific University

Location

Classes are held on the SPU campus on the north side of Queen Anne hill, west of the Fremont bridge. You can find directions to campus here. Classes are held in various locations around campus, a map of which can be viewed here. There is also a campus accessibility map, with information on where to park, located here. The Washington Academy of Languages office is located nearby, next to Wallace Athletic Field.

SPU Accreditation
The courses required for WAL's TESL Certificate meet all Washington State requirements for the ELL Endorsement when combined with the WEST-E exam and Field Experience practicum. WAL also offers coursework for the Bilingual Education Endorsement. Credits are awarded by Seattle Pacific University which is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges and by the Washington State Board of Education.
Schedule of Courses
Our partnership with SPU allows us to offer courses year-round, on campus and online. We offer five-week evening classes autumn through spring, as well as an 8-week Summer Intensive program mid-June through mid-August. Online courses run autumn through summer in sessions that last ten weeks. Please visit our course schedule for specific dates.
Credit Fee Costs
Each SPU course carries 3 quarter credits (the equivalent of 2 semester credits). The credit fee is in addition to the WAL tuition charge (more information here), and is required for the TESL Certificate or ELL Endorsement. The cost for these credits is as follows:
  • On-campus courses: $135
  • Online courses: $180.

Transcripts

WAL/SPU students automatically receive an unofficial transcript after one or all classes have been completed. Please visit the SPU Student Academic Services website to request an official transcript.
Summer Housing
On-campus housing is available on the Seattle Pacific University campus during the Summer Intensive session. For more information, please download this form for 2009. Prices subject to change in 2010.
Graduate Degree Options
Seattle Pacific University offers many graduate degree programs. Because of our partnership, we can offer a transfer agreement that will allow our TESL students many opportunities for professional development. SPU will accept up to 6 credits/2 courses from the TESL program into the following Masters Degree programs:
 

Pacific Lutheran University

Location

Pacific Lutheran University is located seven miles south of downtown Tacoma Washington, at the intersection of Garfield Street S. and Park Avenue S. You can find directions to campus here. WAL Teacher Education classes are held in the Mortvedt Library, which you can find by viewing the map located here. There is also a campus accessibility map, with information on where to park, located here. While Washington Academy of Languages does not have a presence on PLU's campus, students are welcome to contact Dr. Bridget Yaden, in the Department of Languages and Literature, for information.

PLU Accreditation

This program runs Monday through Friday, 8 am to 3 pm, from mid-June to mid-August. Each course takes one week, so you could receive your TESL Certificate within 2 months! This is the South Puget Sound counterpart to our SPU Summer Intensive series, and courses are offered in a different order from that program. Please visit our course schedule for specific dates.
